Tragus Jewellery Guide: Studs, Hoops and Sizes

Doctor-led note: this guide is informational and does not replace medical advice. If a piercing is painful, swollen, hot or producing discharge, seek advice from a clinician or experienced piercer.

The best jewellery for a tragus piercing

The tragus sits at the entrance of the ear canal, so comfort matters as much as style. Jewellery that is too bulky catches on headphones, hair and fingers; jewellery that is too tight can press into the tissue and keep the piercing irritated.

Best everyday choice

Titanium flat back stud

Low profile, secure and smooth behind the ear.

Best after healing

Small titanium hoop

Good for healed tragus piercings that tolerate movement.

Avoid early

Heavy or plated jewellery

Weight, nickel and worn plating can all keep cartilage irritated.

Tragus studs vs hoops

A flat back stud is usually the most comfortable tragus option because the back sits flush inside the ear. It is less likely to poke the ear canal area and less likely to rotate during sleep.

Hoops create a different look, but they move more. That movement can be irritating if the piercing is still healing or if the hoop diameter is too small. For most people, hoops are a healed-piercing choice.

Tragus jewellery size guide

Jewellery Typical size Best for
Flat back stud Short, well-fitted post Everyday tragus wear, sleep comfort and sensitive ears.
6mm hoop Snug on many ears A close, minimal look once fully healed.
8mm hoop More relaxed fit More room, larger anatomy, or a softer curve.
Decorative front Small and low profile Prevents catching on headphones, hair and fingers.

Size is personal. If a hoop pulls, pinches or leaves a pressure mark, it is too tight or the piercing is not ready for that shape.

The best metal for tragus jewellery

Implant-grade titanium is my first choice for tragus jewellery, especially for sensitive ears. Cartilage piercings heal slowly and jewellery sits in close contact with the body, so the metal should be nickel-safe, lightweight and corrosion-resistant.

Surgical steel and plated fashion jewellery are less predictable for sensitive ears. Steel can contain nickel, and plating can wear down over time.

What rhokea recommends

Start with the tragus collection if you want jewellery selected for this placement. For the most comfortable fit, use flat back studs. For broader cartilage styling, compare titanium cartilage earrings, hypoallergenic earrings and titanium earrings.

Frequently asked questions

What jewellery is best for a tragus piercing?

A flat back stud in implant-grade titanium is usually the best everyday choice. It is low profile, secure and comfortable behind the ear.

Can I wear a hoop in my tragus?

Yes, but usually only once the tragus is fully healed. Hoops move more than studs and can irritate a healing piercing.

What size hoop is best for a tragus?

6mm is snug on many ears and 8mm gives more room. The best size depends on your anatomy and piercing angle.

Is titanium good for tragus jewellery?

Yes. Implant-grade titanium is lightweight, nickel-safe and suitable for cartilage jewellery, making it a strong choice for sensitive ears.

Can I sleep on tragus jewellery?

Avoid sleeping directly on a healing tragus. Once healed, a well-fitted flat back stud is usually more sleep-comfy than a hoop.
