A fresh piercing is an open wound that stays in constant contact with metal while it heals. That close, prolonged contact is exactly the situation where a reactive material can cause trouble. Professional piercers recommend jewellery made from materials proven inert and biocompatible, able to withstand sterilisation and unlikely to cause irritation, allergy or infection during healing.1

Nickel: the main culprit

Most earring reactions come down to one metal: nickel. Nickel is the single most common cause of allergic contact dermatitis, and the reaction can appear as itching, redness, flaking or blistering where the metal touches the skin.2, 3 In a meta-analysis of more than 20,000 patch-tested people from the general population, contact allergy affected around 20%, with nickel the most frequent trigger.4

Look for titanium described as ASTM F136 or ASTM F67, not just "titanium" or "surgical grade". A clear standard is your evidence the material is genuinely implant grade.1

Honest claims

Be wary of absolute promises like "100% nickel-free" or "safe for everyone". No material can be guaranteed for absolutely everyone. Credible brands explain their materials and show testing rather than making sweeping claims.
