Does Sterling Silver Tarnish? Rust, Water and Green Skin, Explained

Sterling silver does not stay bright on its own. It yellows, darkens and can mark your skin, and water, sweat and storage all change how quickly. If you wear silver every day, here is what is happening and how to slow it down.

The short answer

Yes. Sterling silver is at least 92.5% silver, usually with copper, and both metals react with sulphur gases in the air to form a dark film called tarnish. Humid air speeds it up. It does not rust, because it contains no iron. Tarnish is a surface film: it can be cleaned off, and dry, sealed storage slows it down.

  • Up to 7.5%Of sterling silver is other metals, usually copper. Copper is more reactive, so sterling tarnishes faster than pure silver.
  • 100 nanometresRoughly the tarnish thickness at which silver looks black. Thinner films look yellow to blue.
  • Below 50%The relative humidity the Canadian Conservation Institute recommends for storing silver.

Why does sterling silver tarnish?

Silver reacts with sulphur gases in the air, mainly hydrogen sulphide, the gas a hard-boiled egg gives off. The reaction forms a thin surface film of silver sulphide: tarnish. Sterling silver usually contains copper, up to 7.5%, which is more reactive than silver, so sterling tarnishes faster than pure silver and its tarnish contains copper sulphide too.1

The 925 stamp shows the silver content, 925 parts per 1,000, not how a piece will age.2 The same chemistry applies to gold vermeil, which is sterling silver under a layer of gold, once the gold wears thin.

As the film thickens, tarnish turns from yellow to red-brown, then blue, and beyond about 100 nanometres it looks black. How fast depends on how much sulphur is around: in a museum, a dark layer can take months or years, but polished silver sealed in a box with a freshly boiled egg turns yellow within 5 to 30 minutes. Humid air speeds it up.1

Does sterling silver rust?

No. Rust is iron oxide, and sterling silver contains no iron. Brownish marks on silver are usually early tarnish, not rust: on its way to black, the film passes through yellow and red-brown. It sits on the surface and can be removed by polishing.1

Does sterling silver turn skin green or black?

Green marks are linked to copper. Copper on the skin is a well-known cause of blue-green staining,3 and sterling silver usually contains copper. Silver plated pieces can also have copper in the base metal beneath the silver.4 Itching or a rash is a separate question, covered in is sterling silver hypoallergenic?

Black smudges can have a different cause, called black dermographism. Hard powders on the skin, such as some cosmetic powders, rub microscopic particles off the metal, and these look black. Silver is one of several metals that can do this, and the marks normally wash off with soap and water.5

One kind of mark does not wash off. A 2025 UK case series described "tarnish tattoos": blue-grey patches of silver in the skin of people who wore silver studs or rings in fresh ear and nose piercings, which can be hard to treat, even with lasers.6 If you are getting pierced, ask a professional piercer which metal they use.

Can you wear sterling silver in the shower, pool or sea?

Clean water is not the main problem: conservators wash silver with a mild detergent in distilled water, then dry it.4 The trouble is what often comes with the water.

  • Showers and steamy bathrooms raise the humidity, and silver tarnishes faster in humid air.1
  • Pools and hot tubs are usually chlorinated. US National Park Service conservators warn that even gloves processed with chlorine tarnish silver after short contact.7
  • Sweat and sea water leave salts on your skin, and the salts and oils on skin can mark silver.4
  • Hot springs can give off the sulphur gases that cause tarnish.1

So sterling silver copes with water, but it is not waterproof. For jewellery you can leave on, our guide to waterproof jewellery compares the options.

How do you stop sterling silver tarnishing?

You cannot stop it completely, but you can slow it down. Take it off for showers, swimming and the gym, then:

  1. Wipe it after wearingThe salts and oils on skin can mark silver, so wipe it with a soft, dry cloth before you put it away.4
  2. Store it dry and sealedKeep each piece in its own small zip-lock bag. Small sachets of silica gel and activated charcoal in the bag add protection, and so does an anti-tarnish cloth embedded with silver particles.4
  3. Keep it away from rubber and woolRubber bands, rubber gloves, wool and wool felt all give off gases that tarnish silver.1
  4. Polish only when you need toEach polish takes a little silver away with the tarnish. A silver polishing cloth is a gentle option for light tarnish.4

Sterling silver vs silver plated, stainless steel and titanium

For a silver look without the upkeep, what the piece is made of matters more than its colour.

Type What it is Over time
Sterling silver At least 92.5% silver, usually with copper, all the way through Tarnishes. Polishing restores it but removes a little silver each time4
Silver plated Another metal covered with a thin layer of silver4 The silver tarnishes, and polishing can wear through the plating1
Stainless steel An iron-based alloy, solid all the way through Highly corrosion resistant, though low levels of metals can still be released from its surface8
rhokea silver tone Pure platinum over a chromium nitride (CrN) ceramic layer, on ASTM F136 implant-grade titanium No silver to tarnish. Platinum is as resistant to corrosion as gold,9 and titanium is protected by its own thin oxide layer10

Our silver piercing hoops and silver nose jewellery are simpler still: polished, unplated F136 titanium. For how titanium holds up to daily wear, see does titanium tarnish?

Sterling silver tarnish FAQs

Does 925 sterling silver tarnish?

Yes. The 925 stamp means 925 parts per 1,000 are silver, and the rest is usually copper. Both metals react with sulphur gases in the air to form tarnish, and the copper makes sterling tarnish faster than pure silver. The stamp tells you the silver content, not how well a piece resists tarnish.

Does sterling silver rust?

No. Rust is iron oxide, and sterling silver contains no iron. The yellow, brown or black film you may see on old silver is tarnish, a thin layer of silver and copper sulphides that forms when the metal reacts with sulphur gases in the air. It sits on the surface and can be polished off.

Does sterling silver turn green?

The tarnish on sterling silver runs from yellow through red-brown and blue to black. Green marks on skin are linked to copper: sterling silver usually contains copper, and copper on the skin is a well-known cause of blue-green staining. Black marks can come from powders rubbing tiny metal particles onto skin, and normally wash off.

Can you wear sterling silver in the shower?

You can, but regular showers may make it tarnish faster. Clean water is not the main problem. Humid air is, because silver tarnishes faster as humidity rises. If you want it to stay bright, take it off before you shower, or dry it thoroughly afterwards and store it somewhere dry.

Is sterling silver waterproof?

Not in the sense of staying unchanged. Water will not rust it, but humidity speeds up tarnish, and salts from sweat or the sea can mark it. For jewellery you can leave on while swimming and showering, choose a base metal that does not tarnish, such as titanium.

Will sterling silver tarnish if I wear it every day?

Yes, over time. Silver reacts with sulphur gases in the air whether you wear it or not, and the salts and oils on skin can also mark it. Wiping it with a soft, dry cloth after wearing, and storing it dry in a sealed bag, slows tarnish down.
