What Is Gold Vermeil? A Doctor Explains Vermeil vs Gold Plated

Vermeil sounds like a step up from gold plated, and it can be. But in the UK the word promises less than most people think. Here is what gold vermeil actually is, how it compares with plated, filled and solid gold, and what matters if your skin reacts to jewellery.

The short answer

Gold vermeil is sterling silver topped with gold. In the US, the gold must be at least 10 karat and 2.5 microns thick, measured as fine gold. In the UK, vermeil is not its own legal category: it is sold as gold plated silver. Made to the US standard, it carries far more gold than thin plating. The gold still wears, and the silver underneath can tarnish.

  • 925 silverThe base metal. In the UK, vermeil is hallmarked as silver, not gold.
  • 2.5 micronsThe US FTC minimum gold thickness for vermeil, measured as fine gold.
  • 9ct or finerThe gold UK guidance requires on gold plated silver.

What does gold vermeil mean?

In the US, the Federal Trade Commission defines it. Vermeil must be sterling silver, coated on all significant surfaces with gold of at least 10 karat, at a minimum thickness equivalent to 2.5 microns of fine gold.1

The UK works differently. British Hallmarking Council guidance says gold plated silver is hallmarked as silver. If the word gold is used, it must be sold as gold plated silver, as in "18ct gold plated silver ring". Vermeil can be added as an extra term, but not used on its own. The same guidance says the gold layer must be at least 375 fineness (9ct) and should not exceed 2 microns.2

So on a UK product page, vermeil tells you the base is silver. It does not promise a thickness. If that matters to you, look for the karat and the micron figure in the product details.

Gold vermeil vs gold plated, gold filled and solid gold

The real difference is what sits underneath, and how much gold covers it.

Type Underneath The gold When it wears
Gold plated A base metal such as brass, copper or steel An electroplated layer. US rules require at least 0.175 microns, measured as fine gold, to use the term "gold electroplate"3 The base metal shows, and can darken or irritate skin
Gold vermeil Sterling silver, 925 parts silver per 1,0004 US: 10 karat or finer, at least 2.5 microns measured as fine gold. UK: sold as gold plated silver Silver shows, and can tarnish
Gold filled A base metal core A gold alloy layer bonded on, at least 1/20 of the total metal weight (US)3 A much thicker layer, so it wears through far more slowly
Solid gold Nothing: it is gold alloy all the way through 9ct is at least 375 parts gold per 1,0005 There is no coating to wear through

Does gold vermeil tarnish?

The gold layer itself is rarely the problem. The issue is what happens when it thins. Silver tarnishes when it reacts with sulphur gases in the air, mainly hydrogen sulphide (the gas a hard-boiled egg gives off), forming a dark film of silver sulphide. The copper in sterling silver speeds this up, and so does humid air.7

Wear shows first where metal rubs: the inside of a hoop, the edge of a huggie, the hinge of a clasp. Once silver is exposed at those points, that is usually where darkening starts. Our guide to whether sterling silver tarnishes covers what happens next.

Is gold vermeil good for sensitive skin?

Gold itself is rarely the problem. A 2024 review of 16 studies found that about one in seven dermatitis patients react to gold on patch testing, though the authors caution that these high rates have limited clinical relevance.8 We cover this in can you be allergic to gold?

What sits underneath matters more. Some plated jewellery has a nickel layer beneath the gold. In patch tests, nickel layers under gold plating caused reactions in nickel-allergic volunteers.9 A 2026 study found nickel release from all ten pairs of low-cost gold-plated earrings it tested, often above the EU limit.10

UK rules cap nickel release at 0.5 µg/cm² per week for jewellery in prolonged skin contact, and 0.2 for posts that pass through a piercing.11 If you have a nickel allergy, ask the brand what is under the gold before you buy.

How to make gold vermeil last

  • Put it on last, after perfume, hairspray and moisturiser.
  • Take it off for showers, swimming and the gym. Moisture speeds up silver tarnish.7
  • Wipe it with a soft, dry cloth after wearing. Salts and oils from skin can mark silver.12
  • Store each piece dry and sealed, for example in its own small zip-lock bag.12
  • Avoid abrasive polishes, which can damage a thin gold layer.12

Gold vermeil FAQs

Is gold vermeil real gold?

The top layer is real gold: at least 10 karat under US rules, and at least 9ct under UK guidance for gold plated silver. Underneath, it is sterling silver, so in the UK it is hallmarked and described as silver, not gold.

Does gold vermeil tarnish?

The gold layer resists tarnish, but it is thin. Once it wears through at friction points, the sterling silver underneath can tarnish, because silver reacts with sulphur gases in the air. Humid air and the copper in sterling silver both speed this up.

Can you shower with gold vermeil?

It is better not to. Moisture speeds up silver tarnish, and soap and friction add wear. If you want gold jewellery you can leave on in the shower, choose one with a base metal that does not tarnish, such as titanium.

Is gold vermeil better than gold plated?

Usually, if it meets the US standard: gold of at least 10 karat, at a thickness equivalent to 2.5 microns of fine gold, over sterling silver. That is far more gold than the 0.175 micron minimum for gold electroplate. In the UK the word guarantees a silver base but not a thickness, so check the product details.

Is gold vermeil hypoallergenic?

Not necessarily. Reactions to the gold itself are uncommon, but some plated pieces have a nickel layer under the gold. If jewellery has irritated your skin before, ask what is underneath.

How long does gold vermeil last?

It depends on the gold thickness and how you wear it. Pieces that rub, like hoops and huggies, wear fastest. Taking it off for water, sweat and sleep, and storing it dry and sealed, helps it last longer.
