How to Insert Threadless Flat Back Labret Studs
If you have just received your first pair of threadless flat back studs and you are wondering how they work, you are in the right place.
Threadless flat back studs are held by tension, not twisting. Insert the pin part-way into the labret post, create a small bend for grip, then push fully in to lock. To remove, hold the flat back and pull the decorative top straight out, using a gentle twist if tight.
A threadless flat back labret is a two-piece earring. The flat disc backing goes through your piercing, and the decorative front piece pushes into it. A thin pin on the back of the top slots into the hollow post and is held in place by tension from a slight bend. The flat disc sits flush behind your ear, making these far more comfortable than butterfly backs for sleeping or wearing headphones.
What you will need
Clean hands, good lighting, and a mirror (especially for cartilage piercings like the helix or tragus).
If you find it difficult to guide the post through your piercing, an insertion taper can make the process much easier. These are inexpensive tools available from most piercing studios.
How to insert threadless labret studs
Insert the pin part-way
Insert the pin on the back of the decorative top about halfway into the labret post. All Rhokea tops come pre-bent, so you should feel a slight resistance.
If the pin feels loose or straight, gently press the top sideways against the edge of the post to create a small bend.
Create tension by bending the pin
With the pin halfway in, gently bend it in the opposite direction of the pre-bend. This creates the spring tension that keeps your jewellery securely in place.
The more you bend, the tighter the fit.
Push fully in to lock
Push the pin all the way into the labret post until the decorative top sits flush. Give it a gentle tug to check it is secure.

How to remove threadless labret studs
Hold the flat disc from behind your ear with one hand. Grip the decorative front with the other.
Pull the two pieces directly apart. If the fit is tight, add a slight twisting motion to the front piece while pulling.
You can reattach or swap the decorative top for a different design at any time without removing the post.
Caring for your threadless labret studs
All Rhokea labret studs are made from implant-grade titanium (ASTM F136) with our SkinPlating technology. They are waterproof, hypoallergenic, and safe for sensitive skin.
Rinse with warm water to clean. Use a mild, fragrance-free soap if needed. Avoid harsh chemicals.
Store tops and posts together so the pin retains its bend.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my threadless top keep falling out?
The pin needs more bend. Remove the top, insert the pin halfway into the post, and increase the bend slightly. Re-test until the top holds when you give it a light tug.
Why is my threadless earring too tight to remove?
The pin has been bent too much. Remove the top using a twist-and-pull motion, then gently straighten the pin slightly against a flat surface. Re-test the fit.
Why won't the post go through my piercing?
Never force jewellery through a piercing. If the post will not slide through, your piercing may have tightened or there could be mild swelling. Give it time, and if it persists, visit your piercer. An insertion taper can also help guide the post through.
Why does my threadless top spin?
This is normal. Threadless tops can rotate freely while still being securely attached. As long as the top does not pull away from the post, there is no issue.
What piercings can I wear threadless labrets in?
Threadless labrets are suitable for most healed piercings, including lobes, helix, tragus, conch, flat, forward helix, and nostril. They are designed for healed piercings only.
Do I need to bend the pin myself?
All Rhokea threadless tops come pre-bent and ready to wear. Over time, you may need to adjust the bend slightly if the fit loosens.
Will the top fall out while I sleep?
If the pin is properly bent, no. The tension hold keeps the top secure during everyday activities, including sleeping.
Can I mix and match tops with different posts?
Yes. Threadless jewellery is designed to be interchangeable. Our decorative tops fit standard threadless labret posts.
How do I know what post length I need?
Most healed ear piercings use a 6mm post. If you are unsure, your piercer can measure you. A post that is too long will stick out at the back, and a post that is too short may press into your skin.
What is the difference between threadless and screw-back earrings?
Threadless earrings use a push-pin system held by tension. Screw-back earrings use internal or external threads that twist on and off. Threadless is generally easier to use and more comfortable, with no threads that can irritate the piercing channel.
